“This tournament has been very important for the volleyball in St. Vincent because it is our comeback playing at this level. I am satisfied with the result of today and to leave the competition with a victory,” said Shaun Young, the captain of St. Vincent.

“It was a bad game for us as we expected to play better. But in general we feel good with our participation and because we know about the good job of our women team in St. Martin,” said Bill Bucci, the coach of Bermuda.

This has been the first outing for the female national team since hosting the OECS Female tournament here in 1999.  6 Teams participated in the competition including:

Antigua and Barbuda

St. Kitts and Nevis

Dominica (Defending Champions)

St. Lucia

St. Martin *(French)

St. Vincent and the Grenadines

The Vincy Team first game was against Antigua on Friday morning (3-0) and against Volleyball giants St. Lucia on Friday Night (3-0) in the Preliminary round.

The quarterfinals saw the team up against Dominica (3-1) on Saturday Morning and On Sunday Morning against St. Martin (3-0).

Despite the cellar position, the team competed at a very high level of Volleyball and it is hoped that this experience would assist the team in preparations for next year tournament.

IN 2009, the OECS tournament would be used a World League Qualifier.  This would give the Caribbean Teams a better chance of qualifying for the largest competition on the Volleyball calendar.  As a result, 2 Female OECS events would be held in 2009 – St. Martin and BVI.
